This week-long Staff & Poi Retreat focuses on improving students technique with the poi & staff. Daily intermediate/ advanced staff & poi workshops are combined with theatrical games & jams.
The event will take place in the village of Mura,located at an hours drive from the city of Barcelona. Surrounded by canyons, rivers, gorges & caves, Mura is reputed to be one of Catalonia’s most charming villages with a history dating back to the 10th century.
Who is welcome to attend?
Intermediate to advanced are welcome.
Instructors will offer intermediate & advanced options for most techniques or split the classes. Please do your best to understand the pre-requisites to ensure that the level of instruction is appropriate for you. About the Instructors
Vojta is a Czech poi pioneer who excels at combining poi tech tricks with dance. With a style and approach all his own, he has invented some innovative new poi techniques.
Vojta has shared his poi enthusiasm far and wide and taught more than a hundred workshops worldwide. In addition, he’s filmed many inspirational poi videos, including the world’s most watched poi video “The Future Is Now”. Srikanta was the first Contemporary Fire Dancer featured by the Cirque du Soleil (2007-2010), performing over 700 shows using fire poi, fire staff, double fire staff & double fire swords. He has 20 years of experience fire dancing including his position of Fire Dancing Coach and Lead Fire Dancer for Cirque Du Soleil. Srikanta has taught poi & staff workshops at locations worldwide since 2003 and has created an Instructional Video Series called Dancing with the Fire Staff. Click here for more info & to purchase.
Jen has been an integral part of Srikanta’s teaching since 2011. As a teacher with a background in classic dance, she continues to help create and refine both their dance-based style of fire dance and the way it’s taught. The two combine fire dance technique with martial arts, acrobatics & dance in their shows as well as in their instructional classes.

* note that we might not be able to do all of this, however if we lack enough time the classes will be adapted to your preferences
You won’t only learn poi moves and tricks – we will talk about how to incorporate these moves into a performance, how to achieve a good stage presence, you will be taught some light acrobatics, footwork and dance moves you can use in flow arts. Moreover we’ll play some theatrical games that will help us to explore more body movement possibilities.
Program Start & End Times
The 2020 Mura Staff & Poi Retreat runs from Friday August 7th to Thursday August 13th.
Orientation begins at 6:30pm on Friday August 7th. The Retreat ends after lunch on Thursday August 13th.
Equipped with it’s own private swimming pool, Els Caus Alberg is a sustainable youth hostile & will provide the group with shared accommodation as well as wholesome vegetarian meals. There is a great jam space at Els Caus, not to mention all the space in & around the hostel grounds.
Poi & staff workshops will be held at an even more spacious auditorium a short walk from Els Caus, with views overlooking the surrounding nature.

The retreat includes:
6 nights of accommodation at an Artistic Retreat Space. The mornings are dedicated to staff & poi workshops with theatrical games and jams taking place in the afternoons and evenings. Instructional classes are held within a spacious auditorium. The jams and theatrical games will take place in the studio at the Els Caus space. This space is available almost around the clock for those who want to continue training. There is also built in downtime to enjoy the pool and to discover the village & the surrounding nature.
Organic vegetarian meals are included in the retreat fee from Sunday evening dinner to Saturday afternoon lunch.

The Staff & Poi Retreat in Mura, Barcelona, Spain is a blend of the Bali and France Retreat. The event will focus on staff & poi technique plus combine some theatrical work, jams and downtime to enjoy the pool, village & surrounding nature.
