Join a fun and diverse group for daily poi and staff classes, theatrical games, fire jams and more with ex Cirque du Soleil Fire Dancer & Coach, Srikanta Barefoot & his partner Jen. This Summer’s week-long Retreat on the island of Stromboli combines a full immersion in dance-based fire dance with pristine nature and adventure expeditions. In addition to daily classes & play on a shaded, outdoor stage, we’ll trek up Europe’s most active volcano & sail our private Catamaran to the nearby island of Strombolicchio!!
Stromboli is a small island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, off the north coast of Sicily, containing one of the three active volcanoes in Italy. The volcano has erupted many times and is constantly active with minor eruptions, often visible from many points on the island and from the surrounding sea, giving rise to the island’s nickname “Lighthouse of the Mediterranean”. The island’s population is between 400 and 850. Learn More…

FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO DO MORE THAN STAND STILL AND SPIN
In addition to learning patterns in which the body is static (fire spinning), students will learn the patterns and techniques for turning, jumping, kicking, etc, in which the body is as implicated as the object (fire dancing).
Srikanta was the first Contemporary Fire Dancer featured by the Cirque du Soleil (2007-2010), performing over 700 shows using fire poi, fire staff, double fire staff & double fire swords. He has 15 years of experience fire dancing including his position of Fire Dancing Coach and Lead Fire Dancer for Cirque Du Soleil. Srikanta combines poi and staff technique with martial arts, acrobatics & dance to create dynamic fire shows. Likewise, he teaches his students to incorporate full-body movement, stage presence, dance & even acrobatics into their performances.
Srikanta has taught poi & staff workshops at locations worldwide since 2003 and recently released an Instructional Video Series called Dancing with the Fire Staff:

The accommodation which is provided as part of the retreat package is on a compound that includes several houses and apartments. All participants will be required to share a room with 2-3 people per room (we’ll place you with someone of the same sex, if need be). If requested, we can place you in a room with a friend or in a house with several friends (up to 4). No food is provided but there are kitchens. Alternatively, you may choose to find your own accommodation on the island.
Staff & Poi vs Staff OR Poi
Attending both staff & poi workshops is highly recommended. The benefits are numerous even if you are primarily interested in advancing with only staff or poi.
Exploring patterns and planes with a second prop will help you to more fully understand and make progress with both props. Also, as many of the movement techniques we’ll be exploring apply to both disciplines, you will have twice the guidance and time to make progress.
Although picking up a new prop may seem daunting, it’s a worthwhile investment! And don’t worry! We are here to help! ; )
1 or 2 weeks?
Students have the option to attend either week 1 (August 14 – 20) or to attend both weeks 1 & 2 (August 14 – 28). During the second week, we’ll be building upon everything taught during the first week. We’ll get into more advanced techniques and assist students in pursuing their individual interests. Join us for all 14 days and a full immersion in dance-based fire dance.
The retreat includes:
7 or 14 nights of accommodation at a private resort. The week will consist of a 90 minute poi workshop + 90 minute staff workshop every morning and a 2 hour assisted play/ experiment/ jam time every evening, M-F. The evening playtime will consist of different activities from guided individual play & experimentation to group games and activities. Focus will be on incorporating the mornings’ technical knowledge into play & performance, experimenting with movement elements, theatrical presentation & stage presence. The second hour of the evening session falls at dusk and flows into an impromptu glow & fire jam. Students can continue experimenting & playing on their own with unlit props or show off their new moves on fire!
Also included is a volcano hike, a boat trip to the beautiful Stromboliccio (bring your snorkel!), a Saturday night fire show in which you can show off your new moves in front of a crowd (optional but great!), plus some built in down time to hit the beach. Meals are not included but villas have full kitchens. Last year everyone pitched in to create potlucks at the shared accommodation! We’ll organise at least one BBQ with fresh local fish.
Classes will be held on a shaded, outdoor stage with an inspiring view of both the ocean and volcano.
Instruction will be most beneficial for those who can already do some specific basic patterns. During the workshops, different levels will progress along different tracks, but its best if everyone begins with a minimum of technical knowledge.
Please watch Srikanta’s Fire Dance Workshop Prerequisite Videos for the poi and staff before enrolling to verify that you are properly prepared for the workshop. If you still need to learn the basics- don’t worry! You can prepare with online videos (contact Srikanta for references).
Only Students who have completed week 1 are permitted to attend week 2. Students who have completed week 1’s instruction in past years are welcome to attend week 2 without repeating week 1.
